On May 20, 2025, the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) approved the 2024 Rule of Law Report, including amendments proposed by MEP Alessandro Zan. This approval marks a significant step forward in affirming LGBTQIA+ rights as fundamental pillars of the European Union.
The approved report highlights the importance of safeguarding the rights of LGBTQIA+ individuals across the EU. Zan’s amendments aim to strengthen protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, and to promote inclusive policies that respect diversity.
The report’s approval has sparked mixed reactions in the European political landscape. While many welcomed the initiative, acknowledging the need for a more inclusive Europe, some members of the Italian right-wing expressed concern, fearing excessive interference in national policies.
A step forward inclusion
The European Union has reaffirmed its dedication to promoting LGBTQIA+ rights. Through the LGBTIQ Equality Strategy 2020–2025, the European Commission seeks to combat discrimination, ensure safety, and promote the social inclusion of LGBTQIA+ people in all member states.
The approval of the 2024 Rule of Law Report by the LIBE Committee marks a crucial step towards a fairer and more inclusive Europe. It is essential that all member states work together to uphold the rights of LGBTQIA+ people, so that the EU can truly stand as a beacon of democracy and equality.
